The role of caustic soda in wastewater treatment

Source:

Sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, caustic soda, or caustic soda, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula NaOH. It has strong alkalinity and corrosiveness, and can be used as an acid neutralizer, masking agent, precipitant, precipitation masking agent, color developer, saponification agent, peeling agent, detergent, etc. It has a wide range of applications.
The pollutants in sewage are mostly acidic, and caustic soda is commonly used in chemical raw materials to treat pollutants in water. It mainly uses neutralization reactions to accelerate the reaction with acidic pollutants. The specific role of caustic soda in sewage treatment is as follows:
In sewage treatment plants, caustic soda can reduce the hardness of water through neutralization reactions. Soda flakes have strong alkalinity and relatively high solubility in water. It can also adjust the pH value of water, neutralize wastewater, regenerate ion exchange resin, and eliminate heavy metal ions in water through precipitation.
Wastewater treatment mainly utilizes the strong alkalinity and adsorption properties of caustic soda, which can neutralize various acids to generate oxygen and sodium ions. However, most of the wastewater discharged by factories contains acidic substances. Mixing caustic soda into the wastewater can neutralize these substances and form another type of substance that is not harmful to the environment. This is achieved by utilizing its strong alkalinity.

In addition, the adsorption capacity of caustic soda is relatively close to other types of particles. It can adsorb on some small particles in a short period of time, naturally playing a role in pollution control. Although caustic soda can treat sewage, it cannot completely remove all the pollution sources in the sewage. Therefore, it is necessary to combine it with other sewage treatment agents (such as polyaluminum chloride, polyiron, aluminum sulfate, and ferric chloride to form hydroxide precipitation) and treatment equipment to achieve better pollution removal.
In the process of sewage treatment, the price of flake alkali is relatively higher than that of lime and composite alkali, but the treatment effect is the best, with very little residue, unlike lime which has a lot of precipitation and impurities.
Attention:
Soda flakes are easily soluble in water and have strong hygroscopicity and corrosiveness. When preparing a solution, it is important to stir thoroughly as the caustic soda releases a large amount of heat during the dissolution process, causing it to melt and solidify at the bottom of the container. Due to its strong corrosiveness, it has a strong irritating odor when dissolved in water. When used in large quantities, it is necessary to ventilate and wear a gas mask. To prevent harm to human health and the environment, the workshop provides regular training for operators and develops safety operating procedures for hydrogen peroxide.
